CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Superintendent Earnest Winston sent a note out to CMS parents on Friday advocating for more to be done about the “crisis of student aggression and violence with our community and schools.”
Winston began his note to say the tragic Michigan school shooting this week hit too close to home, as Mecklenburg County schools continue to see increased fighting and guns brought onto campus.
Winston says as part of CMS efforts to reduce violence in schools, clear backpacks will be distributed to all students in February.
CMS is also doubling random safety screening, considering the use of metal detectors and wands, practicing active shooter scenarios, and working on an anonymous reporting tool for students to report guns, according to Superintendent Winston.
Winston also met with several government officials on Thursday to discuss the growing crisis of youth violence and possible solutions.
Winston is now asking anyone with further ideas on how to end this growing violence in our schools and community to contact him at superintendent@cms.k12.nc.us, because “all ideas are needed to make a difference.”
