Police: Man Killed In Deadly Officer-Involved Shooting In Gaston County


GASTON CO., N.C. — Police say a man died Thursday afternoon in an officer-involved shooting in Gaston County after holding several people hostage inside a store.

Gaston County Police Chief Joe Ramey says the chain of events leading to the shooting began around 12 p.m., when a woman was robbed at gunpoint in Cleveland County and the suspect got away.

Ramey says a short time later, Cherryville police spotted the suspect in his car and gave chase.

Police say this is when the suspect wrecked his car on NC Highway 279 near Dick Beam Road.

Cherryville police fired shots, but the suspect got away again, according to a news release.

Later on, Gaston County police say they received a call that the suspect was inside the Creekside Market Deli, located on Coho at Tryon Courthouse Road, with hostages.

Police say at some point a number of officers converged on the store and the suspect was shot and killed.

Police say no officers or hostages were injured in the shooting.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the man killed or the officers involved in the shooting.
