Rutherford County Wildfire Contained, Over 3 Acres Burned


RUTHERFORD CO., N.C. — A wildfire on Shumont Mountain is now under control after scorching more than three acres in Rutherford County, fire officials say.

An estimated 70 firefighters from Buncombe County, Rutherford County, and beyond responded to the wildfire on Tuesday at 10 a.m., after receiving a report from someone claiming to see smoke coming from the wooded area.

Officials say the cause of the fire is believed to be power lines that went down, and currently, Duke Progress is working to repair them.

Fire officials say crews were able to contain the fire by Tuesday evening, with no damages or injuries to report.

Officials say the wildfire is now believed to be contained and limited personnel are monitoring it.
