TROUTMAN, N.C. — Troopers are investigating a fatal collision in Iredell County after a woman driving a Pontiac died after colliding with an 18-wheeler Friday afternoon.
Troopers responded to the collision on the I-77 Southbound on-ramp from Amity Hill Road around 2 p.m.
Initial investigation reveals a 2005 Pontiac car was traveling south on I-77 when it left the interstate, continued straight after failing to stop at a stop sign, and collided with the tractor-trailer that was stopped on the shoulder of the on-ramp.
Troopers say the driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured, but the Pontiac driver, 87-year-old Sara Sherer, died from her injuries at the scene.
Investigators say the possibility of a medical condition may be a contributing factor to the crash.
